"Right." That was a lot easier than what he thought it would be. He hesitated a moment all the same and held out his hand, using the gesture to focus. The nearest bottle slowly lifted up about a foot, then when it came time to lower it, it dropped suddenly. Cheeks aflame, Tyrus looked at the ground. It should have been a simple task. It was the first exercise and he couldn't do it. Uncertainly, he tried again, determined to do better.
She had said she wouldn't hit him. He supposed this would test that well enough.

The bottle shattered on impact with the hard ground, pushing Catherine to react quickly and redirect the explosive shards. "Okay not what I was expecting..." She noted. It looked like some of the courtiers had cheap taste in wine, no doubt just like they had had when they were human. Walking over to the bottles, she turned them up on end and inspected each of them. A few had hairline cracks she could feel as she ran her hands over the surface of the glass, in addition to chips along the opening of the bottle.
"Cheap wine bottles, it's fine. Why don't you go ahead and try again?" Catherine suggested, demonstrating again what she wanted to Tyrus to do. Small steps were best when teaching an individual to use an innate magic, especially when the potential for overload and frustration was high.

The lack of yelling caused him to still a moment. He tried again, not lifting it as far and lowering it carefully. It didn't drop this time. He repeated the action a few times, exercising his magic in this new way. It felt...right. Different, but almost natural to use. He carefully lowered it to the ground one last time. He was sweating, he realized. Over such a small thing. He hadn't had a work out like that with magic in some time.
Most magic he did was well worn into his instincts, magical 'muscles' that received regular workouts. This was different, and he was back to square one. It would take years to get where he was with his other magic.

"That was a pretty decent first attempt." Catherine remarked, satisfied that all was not potentially lost. Tyrus seemed eager to learn as long as she could teach him. Although she hadn't near promised the quality of teaching that he would have encountered at any of the unseen's own institutions for learning, as it was lacking on finesse and polish. "How are you feeling?" She asked looking over at her student. At least she wasn't making him use magic for everything like he had done to her. That wouldn't have served any purpose but to annoy and thwart any further forrays into learning.
If anything, Catherine was a careful and cautious teacher. Always cognizant of how the other was feeling. This was likely due to the fact that the only one she had ever taught was Brandon, and he had been relatively young when they started. Prone to tantrums, fits of panic and anxiety, going slow had been the only option. "Do you need a break?"

Tyrus was not about to go to one of the institutes and act like his line hadn't handled this on day one, or that he was clearly a late bloomer in psionics. Besides, if he went there, the council would catch wind a great deal sooner than any of them was prepared for. With him still in training, at least the court had an excuse for him not to be out in the open about his new status. He was fairly certain that only Catherine and Grigore even knew.
"I think so. I forgot how tiring a new magic is." Control, fine control, was something he struggled with more than he'd like to admit. He had a feeling he'd need to get very good at it as quickly as possible though. His line was a powerful one, and he was a little too close to one of the original vampires for him to be comfortable with anything but fine control.

Catherine nodded, "It certainly can be and given that psionics are generally taught early in life, you're doing pretty good I'd say." She wasn't even sure how she had learned as child, but did somehow. Living as long as she had, there were things that you tended to forget. In fact most forms of magic and control were taught early in life, children were maliable and often eager to learn. Unlike adults who were often left jaded and wary of new experiences.
"Now that the hard stuff is over, I know you've been itching to try fae magics for at least a year." She was offering him a break and a chance to do something he had practically salivated over when they had been in the eversummer realm.

He brightened and nodded. "I'd love to. I managed to get a cantrip out of our hosts while we were there, but it's just to light a candle." And he could light a candle through a great many other ways. Magic tended to be flexible like that. He still wasn't certain if it even counted as fae magic, given how small a cantrip it was. "Though I suppose, small steps first." He glanced to the bottles as he said that and smiled wryly. Small steps first.
And that included lighting a candle and lifting a bottle.

"Most fae don't know what to do with or trust outsiders, muchless ones like yourself dragging one of their own reluctantly in tow." That was the first time Catherine had even acknowledged any relationship or connection to the fae. Most of her life had been half truths designed to confuse and conceal, never showing the whole truth. "I'm sure you found out that most magic they weild is word based, given the culture surrounding words there. I can show you a few multipurpose spells, but if you don't get the words right.. don't say I didn't warn you." She pointed out.
Given that fae magic was tied to the veil, Catherine stood to reason that Tyrus was probably at least capable of minor level spells, if not so more advanced magic. "Hm... you should already know istalrí and brisingr. But there's also skölir and jierda, sheild and hit respectively. I was raised by a knight.. the more ranged and violent magics was usually the better."

"Those are both for fire." He confirmed. Or at least, he was fairly certain they were both for fire. "Is there any visualization I need to be doing when I cast it, or anything I need to know?" Word based magic could be very particular in its requirements. Some of it just required the correct pronunciation. Some of it required tools and focuses and some of it required just the right visualization or a hand movement.
Magic was diverse. It felt like he'd never know enough. The fact that he'd get to live longer and learn more was a source of great joy, even if the circumstances weren't exactly ideal.

"Both are fire... but brisingr is technically for lighting small campfires and such..." Catherine hesitated. Used as an offensive it had the potential to be devestating however. The first one, istalrí wasn't used as often, and was more of a descriptor than actual charm. "Visualization? I... well," She hesitated never having really need to use one. The magic usually just came to her, easy as breathing had been previously. Now it seemed she needed to think more about it if she were to appear human, or at least speak in manners other than through telepathy.
"If visualization helps you, so be it." Catherine finally said.

"Probably safer to try the shield first." He admitted. Less could go explosively wrong with that. Probably. He hoped. Magic could be picky. He turned away from her and considered what he wanted. "Skölir!" He visualized the shield and watched as a shimmering shield of magic came into view. He grinned at that, pleased with the success. It had worked! That just left "Jierda!" He held his hand out for that one and winced as it hit his car, leaving a rather large dent in it. He had thought himself too far for that.
"I think I may need practice."

Catherine cringed as the metal and plastic on the car crumbled like a soda can. "Bloody mage...next time aim for something else..." She groaned. This might have been a bad idea, as most of what she knew was designed to aid foot soldiers on the battlefield. That was only because she had been expected take his place, which she was still slightly aprehensive about. There were so many politics surounding it, and for now it wasn't much more than a title thankfully.
"Practice? That is the understatement of the year."

"I wonder how to sell that to insurance." He was going to have to pay out of pocket. There wasn't exactly coverage for magic after all. He really didn't want to pay out of pocket though. "And I didn't think it would go quite that far. Less magic next time maybe? Can you vary the strengths of these spells?" Some you could vary, some you couldn't. Magic was weird that way. It sort of defied attempts to understand it, despite his constant study of it. It was maddening and he knew he was missing something, but didn't know what.
"Thanks for giving me the spells. Fae magic is so different than what I'm used to." It pulled at the veil in a way he hadn't expected it to.

"I don't know." Catherine shook her head. Why he had aimed for his car, she didn't know. It generally stood to reason that you didn't aim for something you might potentially damage or ruin. But he had decided to aim towards his car and there they were. "New rule. Always check down range first and look where your aiming." She admonished. It was the first thing academy students where taught when they got to basic fire arms. Look before you shoot, and make sure you know what your shooting at.
"Variation? It's possible? I really only just know a handful of things, and they're designed ranged combat or to knock someone off their mount." She shrugged. Catherine didn't know if it was possible to vary the spells. True magic, other than a few tricks and the psionics wasn't something she knew a whole lot of. He was the magic expert, not her.
"I've explained this to you before, I was raised by a knight and expected to take his place. I can handle just about any weapon, ride, and fight. Magic was not a integral part of that outside those four charms." The higher the ability to be able to go home alive, the better. Especially given the proclivity towards violence from the unseelie court and its mercenaries.

"You do tend to use brisingr a lot. It seems to be your go to." Fire was often a go to for most people. It tended to be highly destructive and obviously so. Other elements you had to be a bit trickier with. "If you want to learn some more spells, I can help. They won't be fae magic though." He examined his car from the distance and grimaced. "And I agree with that new rule. I'm supposed to know better." He did know better. But mistakes were made, he reminded himself. And it had been a long time since he had gotten to learn an entirely new branch of magic.
He may have gotten a little overeager. And by may, he meant he definitely got over eager and now would need to get his car repaired.
