It hadn't been that long since Catherine had been released from Broadmoore, and not without special thanks to Alexander's and Brandon's clever planning and foresight. It had taken the brash and stupid bravery of a 20 year old tired of the status quo of his Uncle's overbearing habits to make the plan work. But, that hadn't been without some amount of encouragement from Alexander and the strings he had been able to pull to ensure the local law enforcement looked the other way; not to mention Catherine's reinstatement, with stipulations of course, to her former position if not better with MCU. While she was glad to be out of the place, but was still a bit unsure of what exactly was required of her in her new position as Warden for the Dallas territory.
Waiting outside one of the various court rooms at the Dallas County court house, Council had received a tip that they had asked that she act on. They were looking for confirmation that an individual who was a hazard to others and their policies was there. Rumor had it that they had committed some rather gross infractions of their magic laws and was planning more trouble.
For some time, Dallas had lacked a Warden, instead for many cases having to let them go or wait till another one could be pulled from a neighboring state. New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas generally had their own hands full with their own specific problems. Recently, the Louisiana territory had suffered from the effects of dangerous bayou and voodun magics, and Oklahoma had more than enough to do keeping the peace with some of the Indian tribes.
Sighing impatiently, Catherine took another sip of her coffee and settled in to wait.

Izaak had not heard of her release, though of course he knew of her incarceration. How could he not, when it had promptly resulted in partial custody of a then fifteen year old teenage boy who was, at best, trouble. He'd have been trouble even if he had been mundane, given his interests, but add in the stomach turning magic he had dispensation to actually practice, and his devilry of mind magics and he had not been a welcome addition to the household. But Izaak had done his best with Brandon, even if the boy hadn't turned into the man that he had hoped. Well, three years part time was hardly the amount of time needed to reform him, and with the other guardians...parenting techniques...well, all the work he did was usually promptly undone.
Still, the attorney had work to do with the DA's office, not the DA himself yet, but closer every day to the position. That work was why he found himself exiting the court room only to see Catherine's very unexpected face. He was fairly certain there was a separate court system for the unseen, with archaic rules at best. Why exactly was she here?
The man made his way over and looked her over. "Catherine. You've changed your hair." There wasn't an ounce of approval in his voice. White hair. The blond had made her seem so much more youthful that this white did. "It ages you some. What are you doing here?"

"Izaak." She replied coolly, doing her best to keep her expression neutral. The man was an unexpected complication in her day's plans, and she was struggling just to deal with what Council had asked. In all her years with MCU, she'd never really taken much in the way of a solo assignment, but it was either this or back into the hell hole they called Broadmoore. "Don't you know it's a woman's prerogative to change their looks or hair? Besides which.. it's really quite fashionable." Catherine added, sensing the barb in the other's comments. She had yet to try to dye it, but suspected that very little short of a glamour would remedy the issue of hair. Either way, Catherine really hadn't given it much thought instead preferring to concentrate on getting back on her feet.
"What I'm doing here is working."

"Working. I was under the impression you were considered too mentally ill to work. Or be in society. At all." And he really wasn't impressed she was out. "Congrats on your...rehabilitation." That was as kind a word as he knew to use. Rehabilitation. As if they hadn't probably released her for no reason at all, or because she had use. He knew all too well how cut throat and mercenary the unseen was. There was a reason he avoided it if at all possible, estranged from certain members of his family or not.
Brandon hardly counted as family really. The boy might have been his blood, but he wasn't exactly fit to be family. "Is there any particular reason you are working here? Surely you haven't returned to police work." She wouldn't have an ounce fo value as a witness. All the opposing side need bring up was her insanity, temporary as it seemed to have been.

"I was under the impression that you were still fucking your psychiatrist, but I guess things change." Catherine replied bluntly. Neither was impressed with the other, given Izaak's tendency towards infidelity and cruelty. "Also I was exonerated of all charges, if you've got an issue take it up with Blackwelder." She added looking at Izaak. Catherine found herself briefly wondering what she had ever seen in him, but then remembered that the attorney wasn't exactly bad to look at. Sighing inwardly, she didn't want to be doing this here and today.
"And no... I'm not currently working in law enforcement. If you must know I needed to come and file some papers, not that it matters to you." She added, carefully denying any association with Council or MCU at the current. It would only further stand to complicate what she needed to do. It was beginning to look like the individual Council sought wasn't interested in showing up.

"As I'm sure that creature you call a nephew would tell you, that relationship ended some time ago." Though it had been a fun one. "How lucky you were exonerated. Your nephew mentioned the charges were quite serious during one of his attempts at bonding with my daughters." Those had failed spectacularly. The cousins had been too different for it to work and Izaak was thrilled it hadn't worked. His girls didn't need to be tainted by him.
"Tell me, does he still claim to be a christian while playing with his skeletons." Quite literally too. The boy was just as deranged as his aunt and if he had his way, he too would have ended up in an asylum. It was lucky for Brandon that he had a second guardian to deny the attempt.

"More like my attorney was better than you are." Catherine replied with mild annoyance. Izaak had been absolutely no assistance to anyone after the incident that had put her in Broadmoore. He was still as self centered and vain as ever it seemed. But he had had to go and mention the girls, his daughters from a previous marriage. They had adored Catherine, and for a time they were a happy family of four; despite Catherine's unorthodox career choices in Izaak's opinion. That only made the conversation that much more difficult than it already was.
"And why don't you tell me? You're the one whose seen him the most." She answered with a shrug. Council had seen to it that she would be kept busy, their logic was it would give her less of a chance to cause trouble and work through a backlog of cases.

"I haven't seen him since he turned 18." Izaak said simply. "Do you not see him? Odd, given how he seemed to worship you." Izaak had seen Brandon's admiration of his aunt as senseless, but there was no talking sense into the boy. It was just as good that he had attended that unseen school. It kept him away from the girls and his upsetting them with his talk of their once upon a time step mother.
"And I'm sure they must specialize in your sort of cases. We all have our skill sets, don't we?" The divorce had just led to him disliking the unseen world even more than he had before. "Yours has always been brute force using your abilities."

"No, Izaak, I do not." Catherine corrected her ex husband. "Given that your nephew is an adult and has his own life." She explained patiently. The only reason he had ever gotten that particular opinion about Brandon was that the kid had been scared to death of just about everything after his parent's death and other things that were better left unsaid.
"Brute force? Izaak.. I never did anything to you." Instead she had agreed to the terms of their relationship, that work was left at work and everything unseen related never entered the home. Catherine had no idea where that was coming from, and really had little idea where he had even gotten the idea. True, the divorce had been a nasty one and there were likely still hurt feelings all around, but were they really airing their dirty laundry in public like this?
"But I can arrange it..." Catherine smiled.

"You never did anything to me, and you won't now." His voice was certain but in his eyes fear lurked. He had been terrified of her abilities for years. There was a reason anything unseen related had never entered his home. Not until that boy did, and his world was upended again. It was bad enough he had lost his brother to that world. The fact that he had a nephew in it, who had lived with him even part of the time, had been near unbearable. "But I heard enough rumors thanks to Brandon's little friend coming over. Oddly they never said a word in front of him."
No doubt the teenagers had known the other wouldn't take it well. They had been more than happy to tell his girls that though, and his girls had relayed it, wanting to know if it was the truth.

Catherine sighed, whether it was out of exasperation or annoyance was unclear. But at least he had admitted it himself that she had never done anything to him. "I never would." She corrected again. Sure she had entertained thoughts, but it was like a battle with an unarmed person and hardly fair. Maybe that was how he had managed to get such an upper hand on her for all those years. "And I'm not going to disagree with you, that is odd even for Brandon."
The two didn't see much of each other, considering how busy the Council kept her and Brandon's own odd hours. Catherine wasn't surprised that the boy had his share of odd friends though.

He frowned and looked out. "However nice it was talking to you, I see my client." He said and waved the man over. He was dressed in what was no doubt a cheap suit, and it didnt' fit well, but at least he wasn't in jeans. Given his job, Izaak had dealt with all sorts. He moved away from Catherine, meeting the man and murmured a greeting. the case was fairly simple. Jeff had been accused of assault and he was here to defend the man.
There had been no police to break up a fight, so right now it was he said she said, despite the obvious bruises on the she in question.

Catherine frowned as Izaak disengaged himself from their conversation. He had always been one to bury himself in work, but she had been equally guilty of the same so many years ago. They both had faults that seemed to be magnified in the other; Catherine's distrust and Izaak's arrogance to name a few. "Of course Mr. Hammerstein.." She said slowly as she turned to leave herself, but paused as she caught a snippet of their conversation. Her frown deepened as she stood there for a moment before pulling her phone out of her pocket and raising it to her ear as if taking a call.
It seemed that this was the lead she was looking for, but getting around Izaak and his attorney/client privilege he so judiciously used and abused. Even if the unseen operated on a different legal system than the mundane, they still had to respect it in some aspects. "I'll be there shortly, thank you." Catherine replied to the non-existent individual on the other end of the phone.

Both client and lawyer had arrived early enough to discuss the case some more. It was probably a good thing, given Izaak knew his client was guilty as charged, but the lack of evidence meant there was no way he'd actually do any time for it, or receive any punishment at all. Life was a bitch that way, but still, he went over the basics of how to behave in the court and what to expect.
He wasn't going to discuss the details of the case, not here. There wasn't much more to discuss that they hadn't already said.
